Korean Film Festival among events on tap at Missouri Southern next week

The Korean Film Festival will open with a screening of “Shiri” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, in Plaster Hall’s Cornell Auditorium at Missouri Southern State University.

A female North Korean sniper infiltrates South Korea and begins assassinating key figures in an intelligence operation. As South Korean special agents Ryu and Lee try to track down the sniper, they find themselves caught up in a web of deceptions and uncertain loyalties, all with threatening international consequencesThe New York Times described this prize-winning thriller as “a tingling espionage tale.”

The film is rated R. Admission to all films presented by the Harrison and June Kash International Film Society is free and open to the public.
Other events scheduled next week at Missouri Southern include a presentation on North Korea by Dr. Sheena Greitens, presentations on the Korean language and screenings of the latest “Guardians of the Galaxy” film.

Gift Card Bingo: 12:20 p.m., Lions Den. Students will compete for prizes.

Thursday, Sept. 7
“Understanding North Korea”: 9:30 a.m., Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium. Dr. Sheena Greitens, co-director of the Institute for Korean Studies at the University of Missouri, will discuss current developments in North Korea and their implications for American national security. After her presentation, she will sign copies of her book, “Dictators and their Secret Police: Coercive Institutions and Sate Violence.” Free and open to the public.
“Guardians of the Galaxy – Vol. 2”: 2:30, 5:30 and 8:30 p.m., Phelps Theater in Billingsly Student Center. Presented by the Campus Activities Board, the screening is free and open to the campus community.
Friday, Sept. 8
Lean How to Read and Write Korean in One Hour!: 10 a.m., Corley Auditorium. Yoojin Jo, a Korean instructor at Missouri Southern, will introduce the Korean writing system and a memory technique for remembering it. Free and open to the public.
“Through the Korean Prism – Why the World Looks Very Different in the Korean Language”: Noon, Corley Auditorium. Yoojin Jo will examine how Koreans see the world through a different linguistic prism. Free and open to the public.
“Guardians of the Galaxy – Vol. 2”: 5:30 p.m., Phelps Theater.
