Indiana man killed, Joplin man injured in three-vehicle accident on I-44

An Indiana man was killed and a Joplin man injured in a three-vehicle accident 12:10 p.m. Friday on I-44 at the 67.8 mile marker in Greene County.

According to the Highway Patrol report, an eastbound 2010 Ford F250 driven by Shemelis B. Gebrekidan, 55, Indianapolis, Indiana, and a 2018 Chevrolet Colorado driven by Brian T. Hughes, 52, Joplin, were eastbound when the Gebrekidan vehicle struck the Hughes vehicle and caused it to overturn.

The Gebrekidan vehicle then went into the median, through the median cable barrier and into the westbound lane and struck a 2012 Dodge Ram driven by Eric B. Ruston, 42, Inola, Oklahoma, and its towed unit.

Greene County Medical Examiner Tom Van De Berg pronounced Gebrekidan dead at the scene.

The fatality was the 14th for the month of August and the 80th for the year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
