On Thursday, August 16th, 2018 at around 11:30 a.m., a Jasper officer stopped a black Chevrolet Cavalier near the intersection of Thorn Rd. And I-49, in reference to a traffic violation.
Upon contact with the driver, he gave the officer false information. He acted very nervous and claimed he didn’t know his Social Security number. When asked his age, the driver appeared to have guessed an age and then guessed on a date of birth that didn’t match the age he gave. After it appeared he realized the officer wasn’t believing what he was saying, the driver put the vehicle in drive and fled from the scene.
Jasper officers then engaged in a high speed pursuit that led through the east part of Jasper where the driver drove fast and aggressively through a MoDOT work zone, nearly striking MoDOT workers who were working on the road.
The vehicle pursuit ended at the intersection of County Rd. 50 and Redbud after the driver struck a Jasper PD patrol vehicle. The driver then fled on foot through a farm field where he was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.
The driver, Roy Smiley of Springfield was arrested for an active parole warrant out of Wright County and is facing several charges including felony resisting arrest/fleeing from LEO, assault on LEO, DWS and property damage as well as several traffic tickets. The female passenger, Vicki Billings of Springfield was arrested for an active felony warrant out of Wright County.
Smiley is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
