Spiva Gallery's African art collection selected for preservation program

(From Southern News Service)

The Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University has been selected as one of 75 institutions in the United States selected to participate in the Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) program in 2020.

The project will focus on the gallery’s African art collection, which includes more than 300 pieces of art and artifacts. The collection was put together by a former assistant professor of art from pieces donated by John and Pam Finley in 1997, along with other contributors.

The CAP program, which is supported by the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, provides an assessment report with prioritized recommendations to improve collections care. There were more than 180 applicants for this year’s program.

A team of preservation professionals will visit the university later this month to assess the collection and collections management, said Dr. Christine Bentley, gallery director. The final assessment report will help the gallery prioritize its collection care efforts in the coming years.

“The CAP program will help the MSSU Spiva Gallery further preserve, and set in place conservation methods, that will ensure the longevity of our rare collection of African art,” she said.

The Spiva Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the summer. Admission is free and open to the public. Those wishing to view the African art collection are asked to call ahead for an appointment. For more information, call 417-625-9563 or email Bentley-C@mssu.edu.
