Wrong-way 92-year-old driver causes double-fatality accident on I-49

A 92-year-old woman traveling the wrong direction caused a double-fatality accident 1:32 p.m. today on I-49, one mile north of Sheldon.

According to the Highway Patrol, a 1999 Buick Century driven by Dorothy T. Cross, 92, Sheldon, was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of the interstate and struck a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Douglas M. Young, 57, Mullen, Nebraska, head-on.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene by Vernon County Deputy Coroner Thomas Hieber.

Three passengers in the Young car, Marie L. Young, 56, Tricia J. Young, 21, and Daniel J. Young, 15, were taken to Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, with serious injuries.

The fatalities were the 56th and 57th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
