Two people were killed and a third person was airlifted to Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, following a three-vehicle accident 11:45 p.m. Tuesday on I-49 five miles south of Lamar.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2001 Freightliner driven by Antoin D. Crawford, 27, Toledo, Ohio, was stopped partially on the roadway on a bridge due a previous accident and was struck by a 2006 Peterbilt driven by Dale E. Burdick, 54, Cuba, New York, then hit a Cedar County Ambulance which was parked by the side of the road with its emergency lights flashing.
The Crawford semi ran off the road and struck several trees.
Burdick and a passenger in his vehicle, Donald D. Ellsworth, Jr., 43, Dansville, N. Y., were pronounced dead at the scene by Barton County Coroner Tucker Joustra.
Crawford was taken by air ambulance to Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, with moderate injuries.
Sections of I-49 were closed until late this afternoon.
The fatalities were the second and third in 2015 for Highway Patrol Troop D.
