Joplin man drowns saving two children

A Joplin man drowned 3:24 p.m. Saturday in a drainage ditch north of 7th Street.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Anthony C. Cox, 50, Joplin, entered the drainage ditch to try to rescue his son and another child who was playing in the water and were swept away.

After rescuing the two boys, Cox was swept under and drowned. He was pronounced dead at 3:44 p.m. by Dr. Jim Morgan at Mercy Hospital.

One of the two boys, Adam D. Trease, 9, Quapaw, Oklahoma, was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.
