(From the Joplin Police Department)
The Joplin Police Department would like to remind motorists that the new school
year starts tomorrow, August 20th
, which brings potential hazards associated with
travel.
The Joplin Police Department reminds everyone that there will be more traffic on
the roadways and an increase of children crossing traffic lanes, particularly in
school zones.
Some of the children may be inexperienced at traversing roadways
during their commutes to and from schools. Please be cautious as you travel the
streets and be aware of pedestrians in the roadway.
Due to the increased vehicular traffic that begins tomorrow, it is a good practice
for motorists to leave earlier and allow themselves more time to reach their
destinations. This will help to avoid unsafe driving caused by the feeling of being
rushed and late for appointments or work.
Please be mindful of school buses on the roadways. School buses stop
frequently at bus stops, and also at all railroad crossings. It is against the law to
pass a school bus when the red lights and stop arm are activated
The Joplin Police Department would also like to remind students and other
pedestrians to use sidewalks and crosswalks provided and for students to cross at
designated crossing points operated by trained crossing guards.
