JFD hires fire training chief

Joplin Fire Chief Jim Furgerson is pleased to announce Mark Cannon as the new Fire Training Chief. This position became open when former Training Chief Andy Nimmo was promoted to Deputy Chief in March of this year.

Cannon last worked at the Kansas City, Missouri fire department, serving in all divisions of the department, and was promoted to the rank of Captain during his tenure. Cannon recently retired from the Kansas City department with 20 years of service, prior to joining the Joplin Fire Department as its Training Chief.

He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science and holds state certifications as a Fire Instructor II, Tech Rescue and Haz-mat Technician.

“Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the training division,” said Furgerson. “We are glad to have him as part of our leadership team and look for great things out of him.”

Originally from Platte City Missouri, and he enlisted in the Missouri Air National Guard in 1991 at the 139th Airlift Wing, Rosecrans Air Force Base in St. Joseph Missouri. He served with the 139th from 1991 to 1998 as a Fire Protection Specialist. During that time Cannon served for two years on temporary duty at Pope Air Force Base with the 23rd Fighter Wing. He transferred from the 139th Airlift Wing in 1998 to the 442nd Fighter Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base as a Fire Protection Specialist in the reserves until 2001.

Cannon started with the City of Joplin on Monday, July 27, 2015. He and his wife have two children.
