High-school tutors from Southwest Missouri will learn ways they can enhance their skills when working with other students during Tutor Day from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Missouri Southern State University.
Nearly 140 students are expected for the annual event, coming from Greenfield, Washburn, Carl Junction, Monett, Marionville, Neosho, Jasper and Joplin. Participants will attend sessions led by current college students and learn tutoring skills that they can utilize while working with their peers.
“It’s the fifth year for Tutor Day,” said Stephanie Hopkins, director of the Student Success Center, which sponsors the program. “The students will learn more about tutoring and best practices they can use. We also hope they have fun and learn more about Missouri Southern.
“After the presentations, they’ll have the choices to visit several different points of interest on campus, such as the cadaver lab, KGCS and the End Zone facility, or attend an ALICE training session.”
The success of Tutor Day over the last five years at Missouri Southern has led to an invitation to share how others can emulate it.
Hopkins and Dr. Debbie Fort – an academic skills specialist – will attend the National College Learning Center Association’s 30th annual conference next month in Milwaukee, Wis., where they will give a presentation on Tutor Day.
“We’ll discuss ways other universities can create similar programs,” said Hopkins. “We’ll explain what we do and offer advice on what they can do at their schools.”
