Spanish radio host, historian and author Dr. César Vidal will offer three presentations next week at Missouri Southern State University that examine topics ranging from the Spanish Civil War, Cervantes’ “Don Quixote” and the Inquisition.
Vidal will present “Myths and Realities of the Spanish Civil War” at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium. During the lecture, he will discuss how the war led to a number of myths and will separate the real history from propaganda.
At 11 a.m. Monday, he will present “‘Don Quixote’ and Cervantes: Dissenters During Four Centuries.” The program will analyze Cervantes’ evolution from young nationalist to old dissenter.
At 1 p.m., Vidal will offer “The Spanish Inquisition: A Historical View.” He will examine the true origins of the Inquisition, the impact in Spain and the consequences and heritage of the Spanish Inquisition in Spanish culture on both sides of the Atlantic.
Also as part of the Spain Semester programming, Dr. William Kumbier, a faculty member in Missouri Southern’s Department of English and Philosophy, will present “Pablo Casals: A Bow for Peace” at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Tuesday in Phelps Theatre. The program will highlight the invaluable contributions to both music and peacemaking made by the great Catalonian cellist and conductor Pablo Casals (1876-1973).
Other events planned on campus next week include an appearance by a popular improve comedy troupe, film screenings and a performance by the Southern Symphony Orchestra.

National Voter Registration Day: 9 to 11 a.m., on the campus Oval. The MSSU Spradling Center for Law & Politics is conducting the even.
“Pablo Casals – A Bow for Peace”: 9:30 and 11 a.m., Corley Auditorium.
“Even the Rain”: 7 p.m., Plaster Hall’s Cornell Auditorium. The film follows an idealistic director and his producer trying to make a revisionist film about Christopher Columbus. They soon find their project disrupted by popular protests. Not rated.
Mission IMPROVable: 7 p.m., Corley Auditorium. The Chicago comedy troupe will offer a hilarious and interactive show. Free.
THURSDAY, SEPT. 24
“Max”: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre in Billingsly Student Center. When a soldier is killed during the war, his brother adopts his dog; both of their lives are changed forever. Rated PG. Presented by the Campus Activities Board.
Senior Voice Recital: 7:30 p.m., Corley Auditorium. Vocal education major Brooke Henry will perform.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 25
“Max”: 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre.
Southern Symphony Orchestra Concert: 7:30 p.m., Taylor Performing Arts Center. The performance will feature winners of last spring’s aria competition as well as selections from “West Side Story.”
