MSSU to participate in National Voter Registration Day

(From Southern News Service)

Missouri Southern State University will participate in National Voter Registration Day by registering voters from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, on the campus Oval.

The event is planned by the MSSU Spradling Center for Law & Politics as part of a 50-state effort to register voters before Election Day in November.

“It is imperative that we make sure all roadblocks to voting are removed so that every citizen can exercise their right to vote,” said JoAnna Derfelt, director of the Center for Law & Politics and associate professor of political science at Missouri Southern. “It is surprising to many people the different requirements amongst jurisdictions that can often prevent someone’s vote from counting if they failed to comply with those rules.”

Thousands of national, state and local organizations and volunteers are partnering with National Voter Registration Day coordinators to offer hundreds of events around the country. Organizers are using #CelebrateNVRD via social media to encourage high registration rates and bring attention to the midterm elections. The theme of this year’s event is “Celebrating Democracy in America.”

National Voter Registration Day was established in 2012. It is designed to create an annual movement of Americans registering to exercise their right to vote. More than 356,000 citizens have been registered to vote since the annual effort was launched.
