Southern Symphony concert to include competition winners

The Southern Symphony Orchestra will present a concert from the light classics repertoire at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, in Taylor Performing Arts Center at Missouri Southern State University.

The concert will feature the three winners of last spring’s first MSSU Music Department Concerto/Aria Competition. Soprano Amanada Jones will sing an aria from Mozart’s opera “Zaide.” French horn player Danielle York will perform the first movement from Mozart’s “Concerto for Horn and Orchestra No. 3 in E Flat,” and mezzo soprano Grace Randolph will sing an aria from Tchaikovsky’s opera “Jeanne d’Arc.”

“The competition was brand new this year, and was held in conjunction with our Foundation scholarship auditions,” said Dr. Jeffrey Macomber, who will conduct the concert. “Missouri Southern music students competed for the opportunity to perform an aria – a solo from an opera – or a concerto movement. If they win in the spring, they’ll perform with a large ensemble in the fall.”

The symphony orchestra will conclude the performance with selections from “West Side Story.”

Admission is free and open to the public.
