Main Street construction to shift to east half next week

(From the City of Joplin)

The Main Street project continues to progress and has recently moved to the asphalt phase along the west side of Main. Currently the west half of Main Street between 15th and 20th Streets are being paved and is expected to be completed this week.

This completion will allow traffic to be shifted from using the east half of Main from 15th to 20th to using the west half starting on Monday, August 14. The intersection of 20th and Main will also open at this time as well.

Road construction will then shift to the east side for demolition of Main Street from 15th – 20th Streets. This work is scheduled to start the week of August 21. The public will need to utilize rear entrances and side streets for parking and access to the businesses on the east side of Main Street from 15th to 20th Streets.

Following the work in this section, crews will continue working on the east side of the street, heading south until they reach 31st Street. Drivers are encouraged to use caution while driving on Main Street, and to refrain from using their cell phones in the area to avoid unnecessary distractions.

Funding for reconstruction of Main Street from 15th to 31st Streets is through the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery program. Completion is anticipated for December 2017, except for specialized work in the intersections along Main: 26th, 20th and 15th. This work will be completed in Spring 2018 so the asphalt pavement can cure prior to placing a colorized terra cotta in the crosswalks as a method to alert drivers to pedestrians. City engineers noted that this is an effective way to call attention to the area, without a lot of added cost.

The City appreciates your patience while this work is being done.
