MSSU weekly activity update

Joplin, MO – Missouri Southern State University will host a Korean Pop (K-POP) dance workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Dianne Mayes Student Life Center.

The workshop, part of Korea Semester activities at MSSU, will offer the basics of K-POP dancing and choreography. Participants will be taught the choruses of two songs/dances and a surprise song.

Those taking part should bring comfortable dancing shoes, water bottle and towel.

Other events scheduled for the week include the opening of a new art exhibit, screenings of the 2017 film “Baby Driver” and a performance by the a capella group Six Appeal.

Monday, Sept. 11

Exhibition/Talk:
 “Portraits: The Influence of Tradition,” a solo exhibition sculpture and painting by artist Sohail Shehada, opens in the Spiva Art Gallery. An artist’s talk will be held at 1 p.m. in Webster Hall, Room 106, with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. in the gallery.

Tuesday, Sept. 12
Korea Photo Booth: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Billingsly Student Center. Students can have their picture taken in front of some beautiful Korean scenery.

A Taste of Korea: 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Mayes Dining Hall. The evening will feature a full meal of Korean favorite dishes prepared by the Fresh Ideas chef. Cost is $8.41 plus tax.

“My Sassy Girl”:“ 7 p.m., in Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall. The Korean Film Festival screening is free and open to the public.

Six Appeal: 7 p.m., Taylor Performing Arts Center. Six Appeal is a world-class vocal ensemble with sharp comedic timing and the energy of a rock band. Enjoy a musical journey that includes classic oldies, current hits and catchy original tunes, all performed a cappella.

Thursday, Sept. 14
Custom Can Koozies: 10:30 a.m., Billingsly Student Center. Students can have a photo printed on a can koozie.

Starting a Small Business: The First Steps:  1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Plaster Hall. Participants in this seminar will learn how to assess their business idea, the importance of planning, legal and regulatory requirements, marketing strategies and sources of financing.

“Baby Driver”: 2:30, 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. in Phelps Theater. Open to the MSSU campus community. There is no cost and free candy and drinks will be provided by Campus Activities Board.

Friday, Sept. 15

5:30 p.m., Phelps Theater.

Saturday, Sept. 16

Football - MSSU vs. Emporia State: Kickoff at 6 p.m. at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.  The MSSU Lion Pride Marching Band will host “Alumni Band Day” for all musicians who participated in marching band during their time at MSSU.
