Man charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest after punching Joplin female officer in the nose

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Incident Spotlight
Sunday morning at 8:24 AM an officer stopped a male riding his bicycle at 7th and Jackson. The officer asked the male for his name and he said it was “Gil.” When asked again he said it was “Kevin.”

The officer could see he had a pocket knife so she asked for consent to search the male for weapons. The male consented. The officer located a previous book-in sheet in his pocket with his picture and name on it.

As she started to look at that info, which was neither “Gil” nor “Kevin,” the male punched the female officer in the nose and took off running.

The officer chased until the male climbed over a fence and out of sight. For safety reasons, the officer with assistance of other officers, kept visual on the area to contain the suspect and called a JPD K9 to the scene. The K9 tracked the male to the south hiding in some bushes between houses. He continued to resist arrest and was ultimately taken into custody.

He had nine JPD warrants and was also charged with assault on an officer and resisting arrest. The officer was “ok” but did have her personal sunglasses broken during the assault.
