A strong commitment to helping those around him led Austin Rose to be named the overall winner of the 2018 Golden Lion Awards.
The Carl Junction High School senior was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to Missouri Southern State University during an awards ceremony held Thursday, June 14.
Rose participates in the high-school’s A+ Tutoring Program, working with students in fourth through sixth grade as well as his fellow high-school students. He also works to help kindergarten students develop better reading skills as part of the Reading Buddies program.
He organized the eighth annual Carl Junction Breast Cancer Walk and also serves as a volunteer for the Rapha House in Joplin.
The seven other nominees for the annual award will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the university. They are: Dehric Cox, Joplin; Harmouni Cundiff, Carl Junction; Kaylie Hulette, Webb City; Hailey Keltner, Pierce City; Ashley Koch, Joplin; Taylor Powell, Springdale, Ark.; and Kylie Shelton, Joplin.
The awards are sponsored by Beimdiek Insurance of Carthage, Missouri Southern State University and KSN/KODE television.
