This past March for the City’s 145th Birthday, the City of Joplin and Joplin Historical Museum teamed up and went fishing for compliments – 145 compliments to be precise. And the public responded by completing the sentence “I like Joplin because….”. After receiving the compliments, the public was asked to vote on their five favorite ones, and the top 12 vote-getters would be featured in the Joplin Historical Museum’s 2019 calendar.
The 12 winning compliments will be announced and their authors recognized at a Press Conference at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19. We invite the public to join us in recognizing them. The event will be held in the Main Lobby of Joplin City Hall, 602 S. Main Street.
Winners of the 145 Compliments for Joplin birthday promotion will also receive a FREE 2019 Joplin Historical Museum calendar, courtesy of the Museum and the Joplin Historical Society.
The Museum publishes a calendar each year highlighting images in Joplin from the past 50-plus years. All the images are part of the museum's outstanding collection of Murwin Mosler photographs. Mosler was a well-known, highly sought photographer for Joplin events in the mid to late 1900’s. His photos portray the history of Joplin, from business openings, weddings, to everyday activities. Upon Mosler’s death, the family graciously donated his photograph collection to the Museum.
The 2019 calendars are available for purchase for $10 at the Museum and make a great holiday gift. A limited supply will be available for sale at the press conference.
Joplin was incorporated by the State of Missouri as a City on March 23, 1873. For more information, contact Lynn Onstot, Public Information Officer at 417-624-0820, ext. 204.
Notice they had to go fishing for those compliments.
