Chat with author to cover Gothic literature, films

(From Southern News Service)

Gothic literature and films provide the framework for a wide-ranging discussion between Dr. Michael Howarth and Jeff Skibbe, host of KXMS Radio’s “Missouri Southern Live!”
The program will air at 6 p.m. Monday, June 9, on 88.7 KXMS.
“Under the Bed, Creeping: Psychoanalyzing the Gothic in Children’s Literature” was published last month by McFarland & Company. In the boo, Howarth – director of the Honors Program at Missouri Southern – traces the social function and psychological impact of storytelling on children.
A discussion of Gothic literature, including the significant 1818 Mary Shelley novel “Frankenstein” naturally led into Gothic side streets: the Gothic influences in other media, including film. Favorite Gothic films and actors pepper the hour for an “interesting goulash of Gothicism,” says Skibbe.
