Starting Monday, June 9, 2014, St. Louis Avenue will be closed between 8th Street and Campbell Parkway until Friday, June 20. The City of Joplin will be replacing an existing culvert that is located just south of the railroad tracks on St Louis as well as repairing the railroad crossing. The closure is to allow for faster repairs of the street, culvert, and railroad crossing, as well as providing a safe working environment to the public and City crews.
The plan includes replacement of the culvert during the first week, with the following week utilized by the Missouri Northern Arkansas to repair the railroad crossing. Once these two projects are completed, the City will pave the street, resulting in a safer and smoother roadway.
Funding for the project comes from the Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax, renewed by voters in August 2011, for the culvert repair at a cost of approximately $45, 000. Railroad repairs are estimated at $25,000 and will be paid from the City’s transportation sales tax, with a contribution from the Missouri and Northern Arkansas (MNA) Railroad. In addition, MNA will provide flagmen for the project at no cost to the City and will make improvements to their tracks that complement the paving work performed by the City’s contractor.
