(From the Joplin Public Library)
Whether you’re curious about the footprint of the new Public Library or looking for some fun activities for the family, the public will find both during the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Joplin Public Library. Set for Saturday, September 12, the festivities begin at 10 am. and run until 12 noon at 1901 East 20th Street, on the northeast corner of 20th and Connecticut intersection. The groundbreaking portion will be held at 11 a.m.
Some of the activities include:
Sand Dig - Children can dig into a mound of sand to find some special surprises.
Miniature Book Making - Make miniature books using copies of covers from actual books. A simple and fun craft for anyone to enjoy!
“Touch a Truck” - Construction vehicles will be on site for everyone to get a close up view of dirt-moving equipment. A Joplin firetruck and a Joplin police car will also be at the event for all to view and see some of their “bells and whistles.”
"Why the Library Matters to Me" Video - Guests will have the opportunity to participate in an interview setting about why the Library is important to them. These videos may be used for future promotion and posterity.
Groundbreaking - The official groundbreaking will take place at 11a.m. City officials, along with Library staff and patrons, will join together to start this community project.

Face Painting – Children are invited to have their faces painted by talented Library staff.
Color a Masterpiece – Show off your artistic talents by putting a new spin on an old masterpiece with the Post Foundation.
Plus other fun opportunities, refreshments and giveaways! Be sure to get your mementos during the event. While enjoying refreshments, visit with Library staff and Board members to learn more about this innovative facility opening in Spring 2017.
Parking will be available in surrounding neighborhoods, business lots to the east of the property, and some church lots located near the site. Joplin Police Department will assist pedestrians with street crossings, and all are encouraged to cross at the intersection of 20th and Connecticut for safety reasons. Also, the site is an unfinished property, so the public should wear appropriate shoes for walking in an uneven grassy field.
The Library project is a partnership with the Economic Development Administration, which awarded the City a $20 million grant to assist in the redevelopment of the 20th Street area following the 2011 disaster. The project will include site infrastructure repairs and improvements, as well as the new facility.
