Miami man cited for DWI after slamming into building at 731 S. Joplin causing fire

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 1:19 a.m. a Joplin police officer heard a vehicle doing a burnout in the east alley of Second and Joplin, and identified a Silver 2014 Ford Mustang as the vehicle.

He attempted to stop it at 2nd and Joplin, and the vehicle accelerated southbound on Joplin. The officer chose not to pursue due to the amount of foot traffic with bar closing time.

The vehicle continued southbound on Joplin and was observed at 7th and Joplin by a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper cross 7th at a high rate of speed, lose control, overturn, hit a power pole and crash into the side of a building at 731 South Joplin.

The building became heavily involved with a fire at that time. The driver got out of the vehicle and ran on foot and was arrested after a short foot pursuit.

The Joplin Fire Department responded to battle the fire, and the building suffered heavy damage from the vehicle and following fire.

The driver, Eduardo Alaniz, 28, Miami, Oklahoma was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated, driving while revoked and careless driving. He was ultimately transported to the Springfield Burn unit for his injuries after being checked out at a local hospital.
