Joplin Police arrest Springfield man on forgery, drug charges

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Yesterday, 5-07-2018, at 4:52 p.m. an officer with the Joplin Police Department was dispatched to Simmons Bank, 2350 South Range Line, for a Fraud in Progress. An employee with the bank called to report a male was in the bank attempting to cash a forged check.

An officer arrived and contacted the suspect, still in the bank. It was determined the male was trying to cash a stolen/altered check and had presented the bank a counterfeit temporary driver’s license as well in the process. The male was arrested and found to have a second counterfeit temporary Missouri Driver’s License in his pocket with a different name but same picture.

The suspect’s vehicle was checked in the parking lot and had a stolen license plate on it, stolen from Springfield, Missouri. The vehicle contained additional forged checks and multiple items of drug paraphernalia. Stolen mail was also located in the vehicle from Joplin addresses.

The suspect that was arrested is identified as Shannon W. Fields, 41, Springfield, Missouri. He was arrested for 7 counts of forgery, stealing and possession of drug paraphernalia with the charges submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office. Detectives then began assisting in the investigation. They responded to a local hotel room and found computers, check printing software, more stolen mail and other evidence of his crimes. The investigation is on-going in this case.
