The sixth annual World Music & Cuisine Festival will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom at Missouri Southern State University.
International students and community members will prepare their native dishes, while a variety of musical groups perform. Food samples will be sold for $1 each. For $8 to $10, a person can enjoy a complete meal, including drinks and dessert.
“The community and the campus always look forward to the World Music & Cuisine Festival with great anticipation,” said Dr. Chad Stebbins, director of the Institute of International Studies. “Where else can you sample exciting, new foods while expanding your musical repertoire at the same time?”
Entertainment will be provided by the MSSU World Percussion Ensemble at 5 p.m.; Mariachi Amistad from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and performances by South Korean and British Virgin Island students immediately following.
“We’re especially pleased to have Mariachi Amistad return to the festival after a three-year absence,” Stebbins said. “They are very festive, with a lot of energy, and play a wide variety of instruments, including trumpets, guitars, violins and flutes.”
The food selection will include offerings from Tropical Smoothie Café, Bites & Pipes, and Fresh Ideas, as well as the dishes prepared by more than two dozen students and community members. Food will also be provided by the Islamic Society of Joplin, the United Hebrew Congregation, Chinese Christian Fellowship, College Heights Christian Church and Joplin High School.
Presented by the MSSU Institute of International Studies and the MSSU International Club, the World Music & Cuisine Festival is a fundraiser for the university’s international students. Emcees will be students Merjen Nurberdiyeva, from Turkmenistan, and Osinachi Nwogu, from Nigeria.
