(From MODOT)
Jasper County - Both northbound ramps at the Route 171/Route HH interchange near Carterville will CLOSE permanently the week of May 12, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
The ramp closings are needed to allow contractor crews to move the fill dirt under the current ramps across the highway to the location of the new ramps.
Drivers will need to find alternate routes to get around the ramp closings.
Signs and message boards will be in place to direct motorists to detours. Northbound Route 171 drivers wanting to exit on Route HH will continue on to the Brooklyn Heights exit and get back on southbound Route 171. From there they return to Route HH from the north.
The ramps are being closed as part of a project to increase the distance between ramps for drivers traveling northbound on Route 249 to Route 171.
Currently, drivers have only 500 feet to exit from Route 249 to the eastbound off ramp at the Route 171/Route HH interchange. In that 500 foot distance, drivers must cross two lanes of traffic to get from Route 249 to the eastbound off ramp at the Route 171/Route HH interchange. When construction is complete, that distance will be tripled, making it easier and safer for drivers to go from Route 171 to Route HH.
Traffic Impacts:
Both northbound ramps at Route 171/Route HH to be closed permanently.
Occasional lane closings on Route 171 and on Route HH.
Guardian Road will be closed at Route HH for the duration of the project.
All work will be done during the day and at least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction for the duration of the project.
Weather and/or construction delays will alter the work schedule.
