Man killed, two injured in two-car accident on I-44

A Springfield man was killed and two other people were injured in a two-car accident 3:55 p.m. today on I-44 at the 21 mile marker in Jasper County.

According to the Highway Patrol report, the accident occurred when an eastbound 2002 Ford Explorer driven by James A. Grimes, 25, Springfield, swerved to the left, striking a 2008 Ford Escape, driven by Andrea McNutt, 31, Ozark. The Grimes vehicle traveled into the median and overturned.

A passenger in the Grimes vehicle, John W. Lawson, 27, Springfield, was pronounced dead at the scene by Jasper County Deputy Coroner George Woodward. Grimes was taken to Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, and another passenger, Lonnie J. Tinker, 29, Springfield, was taken to Mercy Hospital, Springfield. Both men had serious injuries.

McNutt was not injured.

The fatality was the 37th this year for Troop D.
