JHS senior Laela Zaidi recently competed against over 1,700 finalists from across the globe at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, Calif. She took 4th place in her category of Behavioral and Social Sciences among 81 competitors! Approximately seven million students from around the world compete to become a finalist at the Intel ISEF. Her award came with $500 in prize money.
Laela's project and other projects at JHS were made possible with the continued support of the Whitmire-McCallie Initiative, part of a collaboration between Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, Mo. and JHS. The collaboration was launched by Franklin McCallie, a former principal of Kirkwood High School, and retired St. Louis-area businessman Blanton Whitmire, who gave the JHS science department a $100,000 donation following the May 2011 tornado to be used for new equipment and course opportunities for students.
