A Bella Vista woman drowned in a canoeing accident 2 p.m. Monday on Elk River near the Mount Shira Access.
According to the Highway Patrol report, as her canoe approached a tree that was across the river, Ann Theile, 50, Bella Vista, stood causing the 17-foot Old Towne Discovery canoe to capsizer. Theile became entangled in the tree and drowned.
The drowning was the third this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
