Newton County 911 has received 1005 unintentional calls and hangups since January 1

(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)

Most frequent call type for Newton County?

911 Hang-Ups

This year, from January 1st to April 30th, Newton County Central Dispatch Center received 1,005 calls in which someone called 911 unintentionally.

That’s a little over 8 calls a day where a deputy or officer had to go to a house, business or area where someone called 911 and hung-up. Needless to say, we could be doing more important things.

How can you help?

-Don’t allow children to play with your cellphone. Most of the calls we go to are because a small child is playing with a cellphone.

-Remove batteries from old, disconnected cellphones. Even though it doesn’t have a service plan, a cellphone can always call 911.

-If you accidentally call 911, please stay on the line. Explain to dispatch it was an accident. They can verify your information and save deputies and officers time searching an area.

-Make sure your cellphone is locked before you put it in your pocket. We get sent to a lot of pocket dials.

-Educate your children on what 911 is for. emergencies! We have dealt with several incidents where kids thought it would be funny to call 911. Over and over and over.

Deputies and Police Officers all over Newton County thank you for your help!
