OnStar call about activation of emergency button leads to meth arrest on Academy Sports parking lot

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Incident Spotlight

Friday evening at 8:43 p.m. OnStar contacted the Joplin Police Department about a vehicle near 17th and Range Line.

They said the OnStar emergency button had been activated but they couldn’t get a response from the vehicle. Onstar directed officers to the Academy Sports Parking lot to a 2017 Chevy Cruz.

When officers were on the lot, OnStar remotely honked the horn to confirm to officers they were with the correct vehicle. They checked the vehicle and saw nobody in or around it and no signs of trouble.

As the officers were pulling away they saw two males exit Academy and walk to the vehicle. The officers contacted them to let them know about the call and activation of their OnStar button, and one of the males began hiding his hand behind his back.

The officer, now concerned for his safety, ordered the male to show him his hand. The male instead threw an object onto the parking lot.

The officer retrieved it and determined it to be a bag of meth. The male was arrested for felony drug charges. This call demonstrates how we truly never know what we are responding to or the intentions of those we are trying to help.
