Poet Alan Berecka to speak at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

The Saltzman Visiting Writers Series at Missouri Southern State University will continue with presentations by poet Alan Berecka on Tuesday, April 2.

Berecka will discuss his writing process and take questions at 11 a.m. in Room 206 of Kuhn Hall. He will give a reading at 7 p.m. in Room 413 of Spiva Library.

His poetry has appeared in publications such as American Literary Review, Texas Review and Red River Review. Published collections include “The Comic Flaw,” “Remembering the Body,” “With Our Baggage” and “The Hamlet of Stittville.”

“Alan is quite personable, funny and is a writer who came to his writing career somewhat later,” says Dr. Joey Brown, professor of English at Missouri Southern. “I think many people can relate to his experience of being from a small town, from a working class family, and of not being able to find as much time to write as one dreams.

“He writes a lot of family, the influence of religion – Catholicism, particularly – on his perspectives, coming of age, and has an interesting mix of very serious and rather funny poems.”

Copies of his books will be available to purchase. The presentations are open to the public.
