(From the Joplin Police Department)
Officer of the Month
February 2019
Officer Seth Dear
On February 19, 2019, Officer Dear had gathered information that a suspect with warrants was at a local hotel. The guest had history with our department and showed to have a warrant out of Texas for failure to register as a sex offender that was outside of extradition. After further investigation, Officer Dear found that this subject was showing as “absconded” from Texas as a sex offender for fondling of a child.
Officer Dear made contact with the subject. When Ofc. Dear asked for identification, the subject provided a Missouri ID card that was issued 10/10/2018. The subject admitted to moving to Joplin a couple years ago and showed an arrest by Joplin PD in 2017. When asked about the warrant out of Texas, the subject denied knowledge of this and denied knowing he was a sex offender. After confirming the identity of the subject, Ofc. Dear placed the subject under arrest for failure to register as a sex offender. The subject had been found guilty of this offense twice in the past.
Ofc. Dear submitted paperwork to the Newton County Prosecutor. Prior to Newton County filing charges, the US Marshals placed a hold on the subject and issued a federal warrant for his arrest. They took him into federal custody.
Due to Officer Dear’s commitment to keeping the citizens and visitors of Joplin safe, he was able to take a sexual offender off the streets.
Respectfully,
Matthew Stewart
Chief of Police
