Spencer Dawson, a junior at Missouri Southern State University, has been selected to be a part of this year’s Oxford University Choral Singing Summer School.
The Carl Junction native is one of 26 students around the world who will make up an elite ensemble and participate in the prestigious, one-week program in the UK.
“It’s incredible,” said Dawson. “Oxford is kind of the home of a lot of English choral music. I hope to learn what inspired those composers and how they wanted their works performed.”
“I’m very excited for him,” said Dr. David Sharlow, director of MSSU’s choral activities. “He’s a hard worker, a good musician, a good student. It’s just a wonderful opportunity.”
The Oxford University Choral Singing Summer School is a small, selective residential course offered by the Continuing Education department of the University of Oxford. It is a practical course whose ensemble is made up of international students and follows the model of the university’s own college choirs. It comprises a small consort of singers (some of whom are also composers) typical in size and composition to many college choirs throughout the university.
Dawson is a music education major and is also the student president of the choral program at MSSU.
