High school sports magazine created by MSSU alumnus expanding into SW Missouri

(From KGCS)

High school sports are at the heart of many rural communities, and a Missouri Southern State University Communication Department alumnus has created a magazine designed to highlight all aspects the young sporting world. Mike Cooper and VYPE Magazines are the focus of the next Newsmakers program.

Cooper started his career in Joplin television production after being part of the first class to launch MSTV, the precursor of KGCS-TV. At a time when publications like magazines face struggles, Cooper is finding success with VYPE Magazines which feature profile stories of athletes, coaches and community supporters and are supported by local advertisers within the featured high school’s community. Cooper is expanding from Kansas into Southwest Missouri. He is joined by Walfre Hernandez of State Farm Insurance in discussing the benefits of advertising in the magazine.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of July 7 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Optimum Internet in Carthage. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
