Joplin pedestrian struck by vehicle, killed while lighting firecrackers in street

On Thursday, July 4th, 2024, Joplin 911 received a call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at Utica and Brownell. 

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene to find a male with severe injuries in the roadway. The preliminary investigation indicates that an individual was lighting fireworks in the westbound lane of Utica between Florida and Brownell when a pickup truck entered westbound Utica from Florida and struck the male in the westbound lane. 








The victim was transported by METS Ambulance to Mercy Hospital Joplin where he was pronounced deceased. The Joplin Police Department Major Crash Team is investigating this incident. 

The deceased is identified as Kevin Watson age 50 of Joplin. 

The driver of the vehicle was Steven Lea age 74 of Joplin.
