MSSU student newspaper, reporters receive state awards

Students from The Chart – the campus newspaper for Missouri Southern State University – were recognized during the recent Missouri Collegiate Media Awards at Lindenwood University in St. Louis.

The annual event included seminars on journalism, sports reporting, design and developing an online presence, followed by an awards dinner. The awards were judged by school division and were based on submissions by newspaper staff and their advisers.

The following students received awards:

First place for Story Illustration – Kristen Fidler, senior communications major, Carl Junction

First place for Information Graphic – Matt Barney, Joplin

Second place for Editorial Writing – Jack Girard, senior communications major, Joplin

Second place for Page One Design – Susannah Schrader, senior communications major, Joplin

Second place for Column – Kevin Duley II, senior communications major, Kansas City

Third place for Story Illustration – Matt Barney, former graduate, Joplin

Third place for Sports Photography – Elly Booth, senior communications major, Carl Junction

Third place for Entertainment Review – Christian M. Smith, senior communications major, Joplin

Third place for Photo Page – Victoria Gaytan, senior, fine arts major, Joplin

Third place for Special Section or Supplement – Cora Butcher-Spellman, senior communications major, Bolivar

Honorable Mention for Story Illustration – Kevin Duley II
