Malfunction of oven containing 4,000 pounds of dog biscuits causes fire at Hampshire Pet Foods

On Tuesday, 24 July, 2018, at approximately 1:50 AM the Joplin Fire Department responded to a report of a fire on the roof of a building at 7502 E 26th Street belonging ot Hampshire Pet Foods.

The first crew arrived on scene at 1:57 AM. Upon investigation it was found that the fire was in a large oven used to bake dog biscuits. Crews extinguished the fire and overhauled the scene. Fire crews remained on scene until 3:33 AM.

There were no injuries to firefighting crews or civilians.

The Joplin Fire Department responded with 7 units and 18 personnel and was assisted by the Joplin Police Department and METS Ambulance Service.

The cause of fire was due to a malfunction in the oven. An estimated 4,000 pounds of dog biscuits were in the oven at the time of fire.
