(From the Joplin Police Department)
On 01-11-16, the Joplin Police Department responded to 2433 S. Range Line, Pinnacle
Bank in reference to a credit card skimmer that was attached to the drive-thru ATM.
The skimming device was attached to the ATM and was very closes in color to the
ATM. The device has a pin-hole camera which can view the keystrokes for debit
card/credit card PIN numbers.
There has been at least one other such device located in the area. (Southwest Missouri
Bank (SMB), 5935 N Main, Joplin)
Consumers should pay close attention to detail at an
ATM. These devices were attached by double sided tape and varied slightly from the
ATM. Customers should inspect the machine for items that were installed over or around the
PIN pad of the ATM. (Customers should be looking for an attachment on the ATM that
contains a small PIN hole that is pointed in the direction of the PIN pad.)
Lightly tug the area of the card slot. (Most skimming devices are attached with double
sided tape for quick removal by the crooks).
Cover the keypad with you other hand while typing your PIN. (This is the best way to
ensure that your PIN number is not recorded by a PIN Capturing Device.)
Customers should not remove any of the skimming devices if detected, but are
encouraged to contact the bank manager and local law enforcement.
If a consumer believes that they may have used an ATM you should contact your bank to
determine if your card information has been compromised. Monitor credit card receipts
and check them carefully against your statements.
