Surveyors begin work on street improvements for recovery area

(From the City of Joplin)

As repair and recovery continues following the May 2011 tornado, design of the public infrastructure projects will result in numerous surveyors working throughout the impacted area for a period of time. Citizens should be watchful to these workers, and use caution while passing them.

Survey work will begin on Monday, February 22 and continue in areas impacted by the tornado. Surveyors will be clearly marked in safety vests with vehicles with their companies’ logos. Survey work will mainly be on City right-of-way (ROW) adjacent to privately owned properties.
Following the survey work, residents will notice various flags and stakes in the ROW indicating utilities and various service lines to help consultants design the street surface improvements around these elements.

Due to the extensive geographic area, the project was separated into specific areas and different consultants were awarded the bid for these specifically assigned areas. One group, the Joint Engineering Team (JET), is comprised of four consultants including CJW, Olsson Associates, Tri-State Engineering, and TranSystems. Locations for the JET Projects are:

• Surface Improvements (22nd to 26th St. and Maiden Lane to Jackson)

• Surface Improvements (26th to 32nd St and Maiden Lane to Main)

• Surface Improvements (15th to 20th St. and Jackson to Main)

• Surface Improvements (20th to 26th St. and Jackson to Main)

To contact JET about these areas, citizens should call 417-206-9000.

Anderson Engineering is working on these projects:

• Surface Improvements (15th to 20th St. and Florida to Range Line)

• Surface Improvements (20th to 24th St. and Florida to Range Line)

To contact Anderson Engineering about these areas, citizens should call 417-782-7399.

Upon completion of the designs for these areas, the City will let bids on the work in upcoming months.

The project is funded through the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery Program (CDBG-DR-2) grant program of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
