Mock trial season concludes for Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

The Mock Trial season concluded for Missouri Southern State University after a close loss over the weekend at the Kansas City Regional Tournament blocked their advance to the national competition.

The event included 260 competitors from 25 different teams. A total of 24 awards were given for outstanding attorneys and outstanding witnesses, and competitors from Missouri Southern brought home three of those awards.

Sarah Scott, junior criminal justice major from Galena, Kan., and Manuela Vergara, junior international studies major from Joplin, were each recognized as outstanding witnesses. Josh Turner, senior general studies major from Carthage, received an award for outstanding attorney.

In addition, Missouri Southern’s Team 1069 tied with a team from the Air Force Academy for the “Spirit of ATMA” award and brought home an honorable mention after a tiebreaker. The award, presented by the American Mock Trial Association, recognizes the teams that best exemplify the ideals of civility, justice and fair play.
