Webb City Purple Heart recipient killed while help stranded motorist

A Webb City man was killed while trying to help a motorist with a flat tire 6:45 p.m. Thursday on Westbound I-44, five miles west of Springfield.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Aaron J. Eidem, 37, was helping move the vehicle from the left shoulder to the right shoulder when a 2010 Peterbilt Tractor Trailer driven by Thomas A. Fruth, 63, Republic, Ohio, hit Eidem's vehicle, causing it to hit Eidem.

The semi then hit two other vehicles, another tractor-trailer rig and a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Kelly A. Keepper, 19, South Greenfield.

Eidem was taken to Cox South Hospital, Springfield, where he was pronounced dead at 7:59 p.m. by Dr. Daniel Cardwell.

Eidem had been on active duty in the U. S. Army and was serving as an adjunct professor teaching military science classes at Missouri State University.

Eidem served in Iraq, deploying three times, and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a husband and father of three.

The fatality was the 16th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
