Southern Theatre to present "The Threepenny Opera"

(From Southern News Service)

Southern Theatre will present “The Threepenny Opera” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, through Saturday, March 5, in the Bud Walton Theatre on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.
John Gay’s 18th-century “The Beggar’s Opera” was adapted into English by Marc Blitzstein with music by Kurt Weill, fashioning a savage, biting commentary on bourgeois capitalism and modern morality. Set in Victorian London, the bitter tale is told of the predatory outlaw known as Mack the Knife. He secretly marries the daughter of Soho's underworld boss, but is soon betrayed by his sinister in-laws and sent to prison. After being freed by the police chief's daughter, he is again betrayed- this time by a prostitute-and sentenced to death. At the final hour he manages a reprieve from Queen Victoria herself, thus providing a menacing finale of ferocious irony.
The Southern Theatre production is co-directed by Ann and Jim Lile.
Admission is $4 for MSSU students and $5 for faculty and staff; $10 for adults; $8 for senior citizens; and $6 for non-MSSU students. This production is for mature audiences only, due to explicit language and adult situations.
Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. For reservations, call 417-625-3190 or purchase tickets online at www.mssu.edu/ticket-office.
