Two workshops designed to enhance the Writing in the Discipline program will be offered at Missouri Southern State University.
The first workshop, “Tools of the Trade: Grading Student Writing,” will be presented by Kathy Gray from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, in Room 147 of the Mills Anderson Justice Center. The second program, “Improving Student Writing,” presented by Don Judd is set for Wednesday, April 20.
The faculty sessions are offered by the Writing Program and the Teaching and Learning committees.
"For years now, employers have lamented the proficiency level of new college graduates in written communication. Much of this concern has resulted not from the lack of ability to pen a typical ‘term’ paper, but instead from lack of insight into how to communicate in terms, structures and media commonly associated with the career field – be it business or biology, math or medicine,” said Dr. Paula Carson, provost/vice president for academic affairs.
“Our emphasis on Writing in the Discipline mitigates this concern and enables our students to be more career-ready. That is because our students do not only learn to write, but write to learn – all in the context of their specific professions."
Activities slated for next week on campus include film screenings, business-development programs and a performance by the Southern Percussion Ensemble.

“Hands Over the City”: 7 p.m., Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall. The International Film Series continues with this tale of a scheming land developer who becomes the center of a scandal when one of his buildings collapses. Free.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30
“Where Will Your Business Be in 2019?”: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Room 107 of Plaster Hall. The hands-on training will help you develop a vision for where you want your business to be in three years. Cost is $59 per person. Details: 417-625-3128.

“Sisters”: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre. Two grown sisters throw one last party at their childhood home in this comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Rated R. Presented by the Campus Activities Board.
Percussion Ensemble Concert: 7:30 p.m., Bud Walton Black Box Theatre. The Southern Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Chase Neely, will perform. Free and open to the public.

MSHSAA District Music Festival: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fine Arts Complex. Area high-school students will perform vocal solos and small ensembles.
April Fools Day Airbrush Tattoos: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Lions Den. Students with valid ID can receive a free temporary tattoo.
“The Artist”: 1 p.m., Phelps Theatre in BSC. The award-winning film set in silent-era Hollywood is the next feature in the Tournées Film Festival.

Pat Lipira Softball Complex Dedication: 12:30 p.m. The university’s softball fields will be dedicated to longtime coach Pat Lipira.
