(From the Joplin Police Department)
We would like to recognize our January 2016 Officer of the Month, Officer Sam Scott.
On January 11, 2016 Officer Scott responded to a fraud in progress at the Drury Inn. A suspect had used a reported stolen credit card to pay for a room for the night and was still there. Officer Scott arrested the male and during the course of the investigation was able to collect multiple stolen credit cards and checks from the subjects’ room and car. In total, Officer Scott had four victims whose cards and checks had been used at over 13 different places, 10 in Joplin, 1 in Webb City, 1 in Carthage and 1 in Newton County. More than $5,300 was fraudulently obtained by the suspects in a two-day time period. Many of these checks and credit cards had been taken during burglaries or thefts from vehicles.
Officer Scott went by each individual business and was able to either return the item that was bought with the stolen credit cards or checks or obtain video evidence linking the suspect to each of the crimes. Officer Scott completed a total of ten different PC affidavits, eight in Jasper County and two in Newton County. He contacted the other agencies and assisted them in their investigation with suspect information.
Thanks to Officer Scott who went above and beyond his normal duties of simply making an arrest, collecting evidence, and writing a report. His diligence proved to clear numerous felony crimes not only in our city, but in multiple jurisdictions as well.
