Poet Lady Caress will serve as the host of the 2016 MOSO Talent Show at Missouri Southern State University.
A poet known for fusing her work with comedy, music, beat boxing and storytelling, Lady Caress has been featured on Season 4 of “Verses and Flow” and the BET 365Black Awards. A National Poetry Champion, she has coached college students in competitive poetry and appeared at festivals and special events around the country.
The show will put the spotlight on a group of talented students from Missouri Southern. Sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, it is free and open to the campus community – students, faculty, staff and alumni.
Other events planned on campus next week include a symposium focusing on the works of acclaimed director Akira Kurosawa, the Teacher Career Fair and performances by the Southern Wind Ensemble and Concert Band.
Monday, March 14
Pi Day Pie Slice Giveaway: 10:30 a.m., Lions Den in Billingsly Student Center. Students can celebrate Pi Day (3.14) with a free slice of pie from the Campus Activities Board.
Tuesday, March 15
“Akira Kurosawa – A Life in Cinema”: 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall. Stephen Prince, a professor of cinema at Virginia Tech University, will use clips from the renowned filmmaker’s works to examine his life, career, signature style and influence.
“Kurosawa – Sword of Cinema, Force of Life”: 3 to 4:15 p.m., Phelps Theater in Billingsly Student Center. Stephen Prince will be joined by Dr. Michael Howarth and Stephen Teller for a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Bill Kumbier.
“I Live in Fear”: 7 p.m., Cornell Auditorium. Kurosawa’s 1955 film explores the concerns of people living in the atomic age, as an industrialist is determined to emigrate with his family to Brazil.
Junior Instrumental Recital: 7:30 p.m., Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall. Music majors Paige Burris (clarinet) and Tyler Jones (trumpet) will present a recital.
Wednesday, March 16
Teacher Education Career Fair: Noon to 3 p.m., Connor Ballroom in Billingsly Student Center. Employers interested in hiring K-12 teachers will be available to meet with students and alumni.
MOSO Talent Show: 7 p.m., Taylor Performing Arts Center.
Thursday, March 17
Wellness Egg Hunt: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Approximately 1,200 prize eggs will be hidden around campus for students and employees to find. A valid student/employee ID required to claim prizes.
Friday, March 18
Board of Governors Meeting: 1 p.m., Boardroom in Billingsly Student Center.
Southern Wind Ensemble/Concert Band: 7:30 p.m., Taylor Performing Arts Center. The performance is free and open to the public.
