Bomb squad handles suspicious device at Joplin Police Department

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On March 9, 2016, at 1246 hours a person brought a suspicious device to the Joplin Police Department Main Lobby.

The person was concerned that it was an explosive device. Officers had the device moved to the open field directly east of the police department to ensure the safety of the public and staff present in the building.

After conferring with the Springfield Bomb Squad, it responded and rendered the device safe. As always, we use an abundance of caution when dealing with situations that could result in injury to the public or our officers.

The person who brought the device was concerned about it and had no malicious intent. Anytime anyone in the public is concerned about an object it is always best to leave it where it is and call the police department to respond to evaluate. They will then call the additional resources needed.

The moving or transportation of any unknown device puts people in danger especially when bringing it into a public building.
