Five students were inducted into the newly formed Sigma Pi Sigma chapter on Jan. 30 at Missouri Southern State University.
An organization of the American Institute of Physics, Sigma Pi Sigma exists to honor outstanding scholarship and encourage interest in physics. Founded in 1921, there are more than 90,000 members.
The weekend ceremony marked the first class of students inducted in the Missouri Southern chapter.
“It’s part of the Society of Physics Students, which we do not have a chapter for yet, but we’ve started activities toward setting it up,” said Dr. Marsi Archer, professor of chemical and physical science. “It gives students an opportunity to be a part of a national organization that offers resources for them such as job placement and ideas for service and outreach to the community.”
The students inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma were:
Theresa Botzow, Monett, senior physics major
Marissa Gard, undecided, Lamar
Phillip Kovach, senior, chemistry, Joplin
Kristine Pritchard, senior, physics, Joplin
Benjamin Starkey, senior, physics, Webb City
