Joplin man drowns in Shoal Creek following pursuit by Seneca Police

On 04-02-2018, a Seneca Police Officer initiated a car stop in Seneca. The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit took place. The pursuit continued up the west side of the county along the state line. It ended when the subject drove the vehicle into Shoal Creek. The subject exited the vehicle and was standing in shallow water. Officers at the scene included Seneca Police, Missouri State Highway Patrol Troopers and Newton County Deputies.

Officers directed the subject to come out of the water. He responded “No” and then started walking west in the water. The Officers managed to maintain visual contact with the individual and at one point he began yelling for help and he was observed disappearing under the water.

Redings Mill fire had been contacted as soon as the individual refused to come out of the water. Divers recovered a body shortly afterword.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will conduct an investigation on the drowning.

At this time the individual has been identified as Matthew K. Putnam. Putnam was a 43 years old white male, who resided in the Greenwood area not far from where the incident occurred.

Next of kin to the victim has been notified.

The Newton County Coroner has scheduled an autopsy for Putnam.
