The Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University will present the exhibition “Rendered” by sculptor Jonathan Hils, from Monday, Feb. 5, through Friday, March 2.
The exhibit will include an artist’s talk from 2 to 3 p.m., and a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the Spiva Gallery.
“Rendered” is an exploration of both digital and manual drawing within space, drawing on the visual aesthetics of code, meshes, point clouds, information translations and path oriented fabrication. This body of work, a series of interpretations of drawing in the digital age, explores the visual understanding of current and future culture.
Hils has exhibited widely throughout the U.S. and completed numerous sculpture commissions domestically and globally including sites in Malaysia, China, Abu Dhabi, Australia and Japan. The recipient of numerous exhibition awards and a Kohler Artist Residency, he has also received the Oklahoma Visual Art Coalition Fellowship in Oklahoma City where he completed a number of large-scale public commissions. His work infuses a variety of fabricating methods in steel, plastic, wax and acrylics in a variety of scales.
Hils is an associate professor of sculpture at the University of Oklahoma where he oversees the OU School of Visual Art’s Digital Fabrication Lab and teaches courses related to CAD, CNC and 3D printing. He received his MFA from Tulane University in New Orleans and he maintains a studio in Norman, Okla.
The MSSU Spiva Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 9 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
