(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)
On 01-16-18, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an individual calling people in the area and identifying himself as either the Newton County Sheriff or an employee of the Sheriff’s Office. That individual informs people that they have a warrant and will be arrested if they do not pay a fine. The caller instructs the individual to purchase money cards or gift cards to pay the fine. The caller always attempts to keep the victim on the phone the entire time while they purchase the cards.
These calls are SCAMS. No legitimate business or Government agency asks for payment in this method. Government agencies do not call and threaten people.
Please if you receive a call of this nature, contact the agency yourself that they say they represent. These people are professional thieves and con artists and are very adept at convincing people that their scams are real.
